Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez And Olivia Cooke On The Shortlist For Star Wars: Episode VIII

With J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens just months away from opening in theaters, our attention shifts to the follow-up in the episodic franchise, which is set to be directed by Looper's Rian Johnson.

Though the casting process has just begun, The Wrap reports that Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Golden Globe nominee Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Olivia Cooke are "considered the top contenders for the new female lead" in Johnson's movie. The site also says that the group in which the actresses names are in, will do a chemistry-ready with The Force Awakens star John Boyega before the end of the month.

It is difficult to venture a guess as to who could end up with the role, since all of the above-mentioned actresses have given stunning performances in other projects, and things are just getting started and I have a feeling this won't be the last shortlist and/or casting rumor we will hear for the film. However, at least one actress could already have a head start over the other two. Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany was on the final stretch to sign on to play the female lead role in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but ultimately she lost to Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones.

As for Rodriguez and Cooke, both actresses have had a few successes under their belts, with Rodriguez headlining the critically acclaimed Jane the Virgin, and Cooke enjoying a starring role on Bates Motel. Furthermore, Cooke's name recently came up in another shortlist announcement, this time for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One.

Oscar winner Benicio del Toro has all but officially confirmed that he will play the villain in Johnson's Star Wars film, for which there are no details yet.

Star Wars: Episode VIII opens on May 26, 2017.
