Excitement can get
the better of you, and no one knows that better then Drew Goddard, who following
the success of his Cabin in the Woods, saw himself in the position of spearheading
several high profile projects, but through a series of ill-fortunate events,
ended up directing none.
The helmer was initially
set to write and direct The Martian, but after penning the script, Marvel knocked
on his door and asked him if he could write and run their first Netflix series
Daredevil. As a fan of the character, Goddard knew he could not pass on the
opportunity so he left The Martian to Ridley Scott and packed his bags. After
writing the first couple of episodes of the now critically and fan acclaimed
series, Sony approached Goddard with an even more enticing project, the feature
film debut of The Sinister Six. Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight replaced
Goddard on Daredevil, and the filmmaker moved over to Sony, where he would spend
the best part of a year developing the Spider-Man spinoff, which he would also
direct.
The project never
came to be, and with Sony having rebooted the franchise and combining forces
with Marvel, chances are we will never see what Goddard had planned for the Spider-Man spinoff, then again…
"My vision of
that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity.
It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his
life’" Goddard revealed while talking to io9. "I intentionally wanted a
movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was
important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news
is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants.
We just need to let a couple years go by, I think."
Whether he ended up
directing a film that despite its title would still focus on Spider-Man, or
not, Goddard says that as a fan, he is happy that Spidey has joined Marvel's
cinematic universe.
"The tricky part
about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man
in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision
because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This
is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game."
Indeed, sometimes these things have a way of coming around, so who's to say that in a couple of
years we won't see Tom Holland fight the supervillain team.
In the meantime,
Spider-Man's return has been scheduled for May 6, 2016, when Captain America:
Civil War hits theaters, followed by his standalone feature on July 28, 2017.
