After a disappointing
reboot of the character in 2014 with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit directed by Kenneth
Branagh and starring Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, and Branagh, Paramount
has changed gears and has decided to move Tom Clancy's creation to TV instead
of pursuing any other movies.
According to Deadline,
Paramount TV and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes have put former Lost
co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and writer Graham Roland's pitch for a Jack Ryan TV
series up for auction, and apparently multiple outlets have started bidding.
The series won't be a
direct adaptation of any specific novel in Clancy's series of books about the
popular CIA hero, but will instead be "a
contemporary
take on the character in his prime as a CIA analyst/operative using the novels
as source material."
Four actors have
played the character in five different movies. Alec Baldwin started the procedures
with The Hunt For Red October. Harrison Ford followed with Patriot Games, and
Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck also gave a go at playing the character
in The Sum of All Fears, and last year it was Chris Pine.
