One of the most ambitious
projects scheduled to come out in the near future is the live-action adaptation
of Ernest Cline's sci-fi, and extremely geek friendly novel, Ready Player One,
with Steven Spielberg attached to direct. Like most of the top tier directors
currently working in Hollywood, Spielberg has multiple projects waiting for his
attention like Roald Dahl's The BFG, or another Indiana Jones, so it's hard to
say if Ready Player One will be his immediate project.
Regardless, Warner Bros. seems
confident that Spielberg will choose Ready Player One as his next project, and
will have everything ready to go within the next year and ready to come out on
December 15, 2017. Although it seems somewhat far way, it is not. Besides
having to secure the rights to hundreds of 80's pop culture references, and
construct stunning visuals, Spielberg is also very picky (and rightfully so)
about the script, and will only move forward when he it satisfies him. Remember
the fully cast Robopocalypse which
was put on hold or that time he was attached to direct American Sniper and
pulled out after spending a few months developing it?
Set in the year 2044, Ready Player One follows a teenager called Wade
Watts, who only really feels alive when he is jacked into the virtual utopia
known as the OASIS, created by James Halliday. There, Wade tries to do
what no other player has been able to, find and decipher all the 80's pop
culture clues left behind by the game creator, and win the big prize, OASIS
itself.
