From movies, to TV shows, to
commercials, to live-performances, digitally recreating someone is a trick the entertainment
industry often uses when there is a need to bring someone that has since passed
away back to the world of the living. According to the Daily Mail, it sounds like Lucasfilm and director Gareth Edwards will be using the same technique,
albeit a state of the art version, to bring Peter Cushing to the big screen
once again. The actor died in 1994 at the age of 81, and he played Grand Moff
Tarkin in George Lucas 1977's Star Wars.
"This is
one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever," a source told
the news outlet. "Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was
the one to create Darth Vader and there's a whole back story that will come
out."
However,
it seems that the digital artists have hit a snag on trying to capture the
actor's likeness. According to the British news site, the artists involved in
the project can't accurately reproduce Cushing from the waist down since there is
a lack visual reference for them work on. While on the set of the original Star
Wars film, the boots the actor was supposed to use were too tight so he opted
to wear slippers during much of the filming, which in turn forced Lucas to
frame him from the waist up.
"They
are going through hours and hours of old footage from the horror movies to
recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements," the source
told them. "It is eerie to see someone who has been dead for so long come
to life on a screen."
Staring
Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn , Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Mads
Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker, Jiang Wen, and Riz Ahmed, the movie formerly known
as Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One will premiere on December 16, 2016.
