After The Fifth Element, French filmmaker Luc Besson
decided to explore other genres like comedy, drama, and fantasy with such
project like The Lady, The Family, Angel-A, or Joan of Arc, but last year the
director made a comeback to the world of sci-fi, with the Scarlett Johansson
fronted Lucy.
The project has been on Besson's to do list for a
while now, but with Lucy grossing nearly $500 million worldwide, the director
finally got the backing to adapt The Empire of a Thousand Planets, a volume in Pierre
Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières' Valérian and Laureline's 1960s series of
comics. Earlier in the year, Besson described the project as the biggest
challenge of his career thus far.
The director had previously announced that he had enlisted Dane DeHaan, Cara Dalevigne to play members of an elite corp of time travelling agents, whom maintain order in the 28th century, and now via Twitter, the filmmaker announced that Clive Owen has also joined the project, and will play Arün Filitt.
After #danedehaan & #caradelevigne I'm proud to announce that mister Clive Owen is part of the Valerian adventure!!:) pic.twitter.com/SaW3mX5OzP

Valerian and Laureline are exploring
Syrte, capital planet of a system of 1,000 worlds. Their mission is to discover
whether the Syrtians could present a danger to Earth. What they find is a
decaying empire led by decadent aristocrats, a population ripe for revolution,
and a mysterious caste of masked wise men who discreetly pull the strings from
hidden fortresses. Swept up by the winds of history, the agents of Earth will
have to choose a side.
