After successfully
rebooting the X-Men franchise with Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer returns to
Comic-Con with the highly anticipated sequel, X-Men Apocalypse.
The Hall H panel started
with a sizzle reel celebrating the history of the franchise, including footage
of Hugh Jackman's audition for Wolverine, and the moment Singer offered him the
role. After the reel had ended Hugh Jackman took to the stage to discuss the
footage and thank those involved in the franchise. It was this time that the
actor dropped an Old Man Logan reference in regards to how young he looked,
adding that he knows "they killed off Wolverine in the comic books
recently, but in the movies he’s still alive."
The actor reiterated
that he's coming back for one more movie and debuted a Wolverine image with the
character giving the finger, or in his case, the claw.
Jackman then
introduced Singer, who for a moment took over the moderator duties from Chris
Hardwick to introduce the X-Men: Apocalypse cast onto the stage. Because he
isn't the film, Jackman left but not before having a quick sit on Jennifer
Lawrence's lap, and having Singer tell him that he wants him to have a cameo in
Apocalypse.
- Taking place 10
years after the events of Days of Future Past, the World in Apocalypse has
accepted mutants, meaning we will "find our characters in very different
places."
- McAvoy stated that
he was relieved to finally have been able to shave his head, after anticipating
the change since First Class.
- "I'm more
Raven," said Lawrence of the 1983 Mystique. "She didn't wanna be the
face of a world that she felt didn't exist."
- Of Magneto,
Fassbender says that, "When we meet him in this film he’s more of a simple
guy. He’s sort of living a normal life and has kind of hung up his cape and his
evil ways, and that’s where we discover him."
- Oscar Isaac spoke
about playing Apocalypse, and revealed that "this world that we have, it’s
not the world that should’ve been. God’s just been asleep, and God wakes up and
realizes what’s happened and says ‘It’s gotta change.’" The actor also
said that the villain's main power is that of persuasion, almost like a cult
leader, which is certainly useful to "recruit" his four horseman, but
I'm sure he will be forced to use his own fists at some point, so he might have
more combat "appropriate" powers in Singer's version.
- Nicholas Hoult was
also there but was unable to answer the question he was asked because he was
"still psyched about that Deadpool".
- McAvoy then took a
friendly stab at Patrick Stewart by saying that he tries to do what Stewart
does but "you know, better."
- Hardwick then
pointed out that it's crazy seeing Olivia Munn (Psylocke) sitting as a guest in
Hall H, because they used to cover Comic-Con together.
- Of Angel, Ben Hardy revealed that "It’s like every angry, bitter thought I’ve ever had
rolled into one person."
- Finally, the panel
ended with Hardwick asked for the Deadpool and Fantastic Four panel members to
return to the stage and join the X-Men, at which point Stan Lee came out and
offered to take the picture, but he couldn't because he hadn't the camera. So
who had it? Channing Tatum (Gambit) of course.
