Big screen
adaptations of video games have been poor, but there is hope. Yesterday, Chris
Hardwick introduced to the Hall H stage, director Duncan Jones, and cast for a discussion
about the highly anticipated Warcraft.
- "We wanted to make a film which everyone could be
interested in beyond just Warcraft," said Jones.
- Jones also compared
his challenge to bring Warcraft to live the same Peter Jackson had in bringing
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings to the big screen, which is having
something for fans of the property but also to those unfamiliar with it.
- Travis Fimmel
admitted he hadn't seen any footage until today, and spoke of the experience of
doing performance-capture on set.
- Paula Patton said
that her character, Garona, was the greatest challenge she had as an actress
since she plays a half-human/half-orc that doesn't fit in either world but as
one foot in each. She's a slave of Gul'dan (Daniel Wu) but lives among the
humans in Azeroth.
- Chris Hardwick has
seen a cut of the film, and praises Ben Foster for his performance as Medivh.
- Foster then spoke
of Jones, "This is a man with a very specific vision, and he brought that
vision to a beloved game, and he elevated that game to a film."
- Toby Kebbell, who
will next be seen as Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four, plays Durotan, the lead orc.
- There was some
bickering going on between the Alliance and the Horde actors, with Dominic
Cooper "complaining" about the heavy costumes the humans had to wear
as opposed to the "pajamas" the orcs wore.
- Rob Kazinsky, who
is a World of Warcraft fan with over 600 hours if gameplay, said he was the
expert on set, adding that as a result of so much playing he lost relationships,
and self-esteem, "but doing this movies makes it all okay!"
- On the film versus
the game, Kazinsky explained, "I’m a gamer and I know what I’m expecting,
I know what you’re expecting from this thing, and I promise you Duncan Jones
has made the movie you want to see."
- When asked about
the performance-capture experience, Clancy Brown, just started making grunting
noises and speaking like an orc.
- Of her character
Lady Taria, Ruth Negga said that "behind
every great man there’s a greater woman."
- Finally, Daniel Wu
said that the only reason he did this movie was because of his wife, who is a
big World of Warcraft fan. "When I got the audition for this, I actually was
meant to take a year off because my wife had a baby and we were gonna spend a
year with the baby." And when he told her he got offered Warcraft she
said, "You have to fucking do it!"
