Before the second
season premiere of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's The Strain, the
creators and cast travelled to Comic-Con to tease us what's ahead for the
characters.
- Season two will depart
from the books in about eighty percent, and that's just fine with author Chuck
Hogan, who besides giving his blessings to the coming changes, stated that part
of the fun was going back and reinventing what he had written, while del Toro
added, "We put up postmarks [for the show]
but then wanted to play with it." He said of the nature of television. "TV
is a living entity… You need to let it tell you what it needs."
- Corey Stoll
revealed that with his estranged wife turning into a vampire, Eph has hit
"the bottom of the bottle", but adds that he already played an
alcoholic (House of Cards) once before, and that he wanted to do something
different this time around, revealing that Eph is "a
functional alcoholic and… gets to crack wise."
- Mia Maestro reveals
that Nora is much "more unleashed" this new season, "she’s a
complete new person… She becomes a warrior, ready to kill anyone at any time."
- Being a vampire is "a
ton of fun…" said Natalie Brown, who plays Eph's wife Kelly in the series.
"It’s the best worst thing that ever happened to Kelly." The actress
also revealed that her character's change allows her to come into contact with
different characters, and that she doesn't mind sitting in the makeup chair for
four and half hours every day.
- For his own egotistical
desires, Jonathan Hyde's Eldritch Palmer has condemned humanity. And how does
he justify such actions? “I don’t think he
justifies anything to himself. Never has, never will.” Hyde continued, “However
in the second season, you will see a softer side to [Eldritch]." While
showrunner Carlton Cuse adds, "maybe a little
romance."
- Miguel Gomez
revealed that if in the first season Gus could be described as "a lone
wolf going through things by himself", then in this new season "he
does cross with a few of the characters."
- When asked what was
his favorite joke, Richard Sammel's Thomas Eichorst revealed, "Two planets
meet. One planet tells the other one – ‘You don’t look very good.’ The planet
responds – ‘That’s because I have Homo sapiens.’ The other planet leans in –
‘Don’t worry – it won’t last.’" Del Toro shook his head and said, "You’re
one weird dude [Richard]."
- With Blade 2 also
on his list of accomplishments, is hard not to think about the similarities
between both species of vampires del Toro has created Any connection between
the two? Well, no, as according to the filmmaker, he had the notes for these
vampires before Blade 2 "when [he] was trying to do I Am Legend. That
didn’t work… but ostensibly it’s the same blue prints from before Blade…"
- Other than the
premiere episode, season two of The Strain will have more flashbacks. "I
like that this is an ancient story that spans centuries," said Cuse. "There
is a flashback that goes way, way back."
- The director also
revealed that he directed an entire segment in episode four introducing "one
of his favorite characters", a Mexican wrestler. The director didn't
reveal any other information about the character, but Mexican actor Joaquin
Cosio is set to play Angel Guzman Hurtado, aka The Silver Angel, a former
luchador turned dishwasher. Del Toro described the segment as a "black and
white Mexican western".
- When asked about
what shows influenced The Strain, del Toro revealed that "some kids want
to be Superman; I wanted to be Kolchak…" from The Night Stalker. "That
was the first spark that influenced The Strain."
- If he could cross
the series with any other show or film del Toro picked a "Justin Bieber
concert…or maybe just Justin Bieber without the concert."
