Redundant though it may seem, but with two origin
stories already printed in film, Spider-Man fans were starting to wonder if
they would be seeing yet another one come July 28, 2017 when the Sony/Marvel
reboot of the character hits theaters. No, say the project screenwriters,
Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
While at the premiere of Vacation, the writing duo was
asked about differences between their take on the Web-Head and the previous two
franchises.
"The main difference I think is the tone will be
really grounded, about a real kid who gets these powers and what that means to
a geeky, outcast kid and how he deals with them," Goldenstein told USA Today. "You don't
instantly become a superhero, it's a long journey." Daley added,
"It's spending a lot more time in the high school. And so we have time to sort
of develop the powers with him and experience the wish fulfillment. And also
just the fact that it is really alienating to other people."
Daley then not
only confirmed that the upcoming reboot will not waste time probing into the
Webcrawler's origins, but will stay away from some of the previous franchises (Sam
Raimi) less memorable moments.
"I don't think the origin story is going to be
in there and also I think we’re going to avoid the emo dance... as much as I love it," he said.
Finally, Goldstein and
Daley revealed that they want to focus on the on the Peter
Parker who is "self-conscious", not popular, and a "little
geeky." Goldstein added that they "want to sort of tell that
story, and the fact that getting powers and becoming Spider-Man doesn't solve
your problems," and Daley interjected saying, "because he has to keep
it a secret from everyone, so it just makes everything worse for him."
