It seems that with Jurassic World beating box-office
records, Sony Pictures is finally ready to bank Passengers into its next stage,
with Oscar nominated director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) attached to
direct, and Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence leading.
Written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), Passengers is a futuristic
love story set aboard a spacecraft carrying thousands of people in cryogenic
sleep towards a distant new planet. One man however wakes up 90 years earlier
than expected and instead of growing old, and possibly mad all alone, he
decides to wake up a female passenger.
According to Deadline, Sony was unsure about the
budget, but with Pratt recent string of hits, which include The Lego Movie,
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and the abovementioned Jurassic World, the
studio is feeling more at ease with the $117 million price tag the project
carries, which is a steal considering this kind of project usually ends up costing
upwards of $200 million. Even so, if Tom Rothman's, Sony's new head, profile is
any indication, the budget could get trimmed to about $100 million, with
Lawrence banking $20 million, Pratt at least $10 and Tyldum getting
something in the mid-seven figures.
Both Pratt and Lawrence seem to be keen on getting the
ball rolling since they carved out time of their schedules to start filming
Passengers as early as this Fall.
