While original content brings recognition and accolades, franchises pay the
bills and if it is a reboot, remake, or long lost sequels with a familiar name even
better, just look at the soon to be the biggest movie of the year thus far,
Jurassic World.
There are plenty of older franchises with big names that studios would absolutely
love to get their hands on, but with some of the biggest titles like Star Trek,
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, and James Bond already in development,
what is left? Well, Back To The Future!
Personally, I'm not opposed to the idea of rebooting or remaking
franchises, I will still have the original to go back to if the new film(s)
fail in comparison, but for those that have their names splatter across the
posters it's a different talk altogether.
"Oh, God
no," Robert Zemeckis the director of the Back to the Future trilogy emphatically told the Telegraph, when asked
about the idea. "That can’t happen until both Bob and I are dead. And
then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it. I
mean, to me, that’s outrageous. Especially since it’s a good movie. It’s like
saying ‘Let’s remake Citizen Kane. Who are we going to get to play
Kane?’ What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?"
Zemeckis also revealed that under their contracts with
Universal and Amblin Entertainment, both him and Gale (co-writer) have final
say in the matter, meaning that we won't be seeing a new Back to the Future
film in the near future anytime soon.
