Yesterday, after slapping nerd culture in the face
with some remarks about its infantilization with comic book, and superhero
movies, Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible, Shaun of the Dead, Paul, Star Trek)
also addressed the vision behind the upcoming Star Trek 3, or Star Trek Beyond
(not confirmed), which he is co-writing with Doug Jun for Justin Lin (Fast
& Furious) to direct.
They had a script for Star Trek that wasn’t really
working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a
little bit too Star Trek-y.
The script Pegg is talking about is most likely the
one Robert Orci was overseeing when he was still attached to the project in a
more creative capacity.
But what exactly does Pegg mean by it being too Star
Trek-y? Well it seems that Paramount is looking to have the franchise hit the
same billion dollar mark Avengers did.
Avengers Assemble, which is a pretty nerdy,
comic-book, supposedly niche thing, made $1.5bn dollars. Star Trek Into Darkness made half a billion, which is still
brilliant. But it means that, according to the studio, there’s still $1bn worth
of box office that don’t go and see Star
Trek. And they want to know why.
So how does the studio, and
for that matter Pegg and Jung go about turning Star Trek into the next billion
dollar franchise?
"People don’t see it
being a fun, brightly coloured, Saturday night entertainment like the Avengers,"
adding that the solution was to “make a western or a thriller or a heist movie,
then populate that with Star
Trek characters so
it’s more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent."
What do you think of the "solution
to the problem"?
Star Trek 3 is scheduled to
open on July 8, 2016.
