After greenlighting
the pilot, Syfy now announces that they have given a series order to the
adaptation of author Lev Grossman's The Magician book series, which include The
Magicians, The Magician King, and The Magician's Land.
The series follows
Quentin Coldwater, a young man who heads into upstate New York to frequent a
secret magic school where joins a league of powerful magicians.
The pilot was directed
by Mike Cahill (I, Origins), and written by Sera Gamble, and John McNamara.
Both Gamble and McNamara will executive produce the 12-episode series alongside
Janice Williams, and Michael London from Groundswell Productions.
Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, The
Magicians stars Jason Ralph (A Most Violent Year, Aquarius) as Quentin
Coldwater, a brilliant grad student who enrolls in Brakebills College for
Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic.
He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world
they read about as children is all too real – and poses grave danger to
humanity. Stella Maeve (Chicago P.D.), Hale Appleman (Teeth), Arjun Gupta
(Nurse Jackie) and Summer Bishil (Towelhead, Lucky 7)
also star in this one hour drama.
