John Williams score
of Star Wars is among the most beloved, and iconic pieces of music ever written
for film, so it's not surprising to hear that both he and J.J. Abrams are going
to reference some of the classic Star Wars material in the highly anticipated
Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
There are some scenes
where we do make reference to earlier thematic pieces. We haven’t done it yet,
but we’re planning to do it. It’s something that I think will seem very natural
and right in the moments for which we’ve chosen to do these kinds of quotes.
There aren’t many of them, but there are a few that I think are important and
will seem very much a part of the fabric of the piece in a positive and
constructive way.
Williams comments to Vanity Fair are essentially a
confirmation of the plan he outlined a couple of years ago when his
return was first announced.
There is plenty of
inspiration in the Star Wars mythos for the composer to use, so what oldie would
you like to hear in the upcoming film? Binary Sunset, the Imperial March, Luke
and Leia, Dual of the Fates?
Williams, who worked
on all six now seven films plus countless Star Wars TV series, has been
nominated a staggering forty-nine times for the Academy Awards, winning five
for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., and Schindler's List.
Star Wars: The Force
Awakens opens on December 18.
