Before J.J. Abrams had a chance to say yes to Star
Wars: The Force Awakens, other directors like Guillermo del Toro, David
Fincher, and Brad Bird were being eyed by Disney and Lucasfilm to helm the
highly anticipated sequel.
Now, while promoting Tomorrowland, Brad Bird explained
that it was simply because of schedule, prior commitments, and love for both
films that he couldn't take the reins on the new Star Wars film.
"It
absolutely was [a tough decision]," said Bird. "But there was no way
to do that film without junking this film, and we had already gotten George
Clooney involved and I was excited about this film. I understand they had to
get [The Force Awakens] made, and they would’ve had to push it in order for
me to do it."
However,
now that Josh Trank has left the second Star Wars spinoff there might still be
a chance for a Bird.
"Right
now I’m writing Incredibles 2, so I’ve got my hands full."
Well
it seems that for now it isn't meant to be, but at least the director is
working on a sequel to another fan favorite, The Incredibles.
