After a disappointing last
film (Only God Forgives), writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn is about to wrap
up his latest neon extravaganza, the aptly titled The Neon Demon. The horror
film stars Elle Fanning as Jesse, a aspiring model that moves to Los Angeles
where "her
youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will
take any means necessary to get what she has."
I'm not what you would call a fan of
Refn's work. I liked the Pusher trilogy, Bronson, and Valhalla Rising, but the
filmmaker's other work felt empty. Nonetheless, I'm eager to see if The Neon
Demon will make use of its horror set-up to make a point (if i'm not reading too much into the description) about how a predominantly
male ruled society affect women, and the strives some go through for physical
perfection.
The film also stars Keanu Reeves,
Jena Malone, Christina Hendricks, Bella Heathcote, Desmond Harrington, Karl
Glusman, and Abbey Lee, and should hit theaters in 2016.
