In Bryan Singer's X2: X-Men United, Alan Cumming played
a more seasoned and darker version of Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. In the
upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse however, Singer has not only gave the character a
facelift but also lightening him up.
Speaking to Den of Geek, Kodi Smit-McPhee has revealed
that his Nightcrawler will stick more to the source material, and will be more
fun, and swashbuckling than Cumming's version.
"I think I’m really going to make it my own
because it is kind of going back and its seeing the younger character,"
Smit-McPhee said. "I realize the Nightcrawler that is portrayed in X2 is one that has been through quite a
bit more and has really embraced the superhero part of him—a kind of violent
part. Whereas I think what they’re trying to show here is the more vulnerable
Nightcrawler and the one we all kind of related to in the comics. It’s really
the fun, happy, swashbuckling Nightcrawler that we all love, so I really can’t
wait to portray that. He’s just very vulnerable and truthful, and grounded in
his faith. I think it’s something new though that we’ll see."
The 18-year old actor also went on to say that "all of the traditional things that we want in
it—it’s still there. Hint, hint."
Not entirely sure what he's hinting
at but in the source material the Fuzzy Elf is the child of Mystique (Jennifer
Lawrence), and Azazel, who we last saw in X-Men: First Class being played by
Jason Flemyng. The source material also has Kurt being raised by the sorceress
and Gypsy Queen Margali Szardos, being forced into working in a freak show,
co-founding the British super team Excalibur, being falsely ordained, and many other
adventures and twists of events.
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on
May 27, 2016.
