Lionsgate has postponed the release of the Power Rangers movie by almost
half a year, and has placed the project on a month not known for its box-office
potential.
The studio provided no reason for the change, but delaying what I assume is
intended as the first film of franchise from its initial July 22, 2016 release date
to a not very savoring January 13, 2017 shows a lack of confidence in the
project. Even if it was behind schedule, they could have just delayed it until
the summer of 2017, where studio tentoples tend to live. Besides, it's not like
this is a sequel to anything so the pressure is off and they could take their
time developing it, instead of dropping it in January.
X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller, and Zack Stentz are currently
working on the screenplay, and Project Almanac director dean Israelite is in
talks to helm the film, which is being described as a "modern reinvention"
of the property that will see a group or ordinary teenagers teaming up to save
the world after being infused with alien powers.
