Though Star Wars dominated the
news in recent days, Justin Lin's Star Trek 3 is just around the corner with
principal photography scheduled to begin this June.
While at CinemaCon, MTV caught
up with Simon Pegg, who was there promoting the upcoming Mission: Impossible -
Rogue Nation, and managed to ask him a couple of questions regarding the third
installment in this new Trek world.
First things first, Pegg, who
is writing the Star Trek 3 script with Doug Jun, seemingly confirmed that Idris
Elba either already is, or is in the process of being cast in the film, and
that he will play an original and "kick ass" character and not some
already established character.
It will be [an
original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we’re out there.
We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we’re gonna try
and reflect that in the movie.
Most complaints about
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot is that it doesn't feel like the TV series that
started it all. Well to that, Pegg says that after a day of working on the
script, both he and Jun would re-watch episodes of the original series to try
and absorb the spirit of what made the show great.
We can invest in it the spirit of the show and get
back to the essence of what it is, and so what we’re hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget
where it came from.
Finally Pegg commented on the
recently released Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, and said it was
"better than all of the prequels combined," and added that he has
seen quite a bit of the film, and that if you felt emotional after the trailer
then you will be a wreck after watching the film.
