Since its launch on April 10th, Marvel's
Daredevil has become the studio's newest success story. The deal made with
Netflix, offered creators Drew Goddard, and Steven S. DeKnight the opportunity
to delve into a different side of Marvel that we have never seen been put on
screen, however, it seems that some tried to push the character to a different
venue.
While promoting Avengers: Age of
Ultron, Joss Whedon revealed that he tried to convince Marvel higher-ups to
give the Man Without Fear another big screen chance.
"I fought for Daredevil
to be a film instead of a TV show," Whedon reveals. "Then
under the auspices of Drew Goddard and Steve DeKnight… I’m dying to see the
show but they released it just as I started the press tour! If the show’s
working, the show’s working. Comic books are serialized entertainment and a lot
of them lend themselves to TV shows as much or more than they do to
movies."
As much I as would like to see
Daredevil be redeemed in the big screen, I'm glad the studio decided to go with
a TV mini-series instead.
Whedon also spoke about why he
likes the character, and why now he thinks that TV might just be the right
place for the character.
"I
like him because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller
basically. So for me I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood
on TV but TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might
just be the right place."
