The Star Wars
Celebration panel for the upcoming standalone films ended moments ago, and the
first official details about the spinoff film has been revealed.
At the panel, director
Gareth Edward's revealed that Rogue One takes place between the events of
Revenge of the Sith, and A New Hope, and that it will be about a group of
Rebels coming together and infiltrating the Empire to steal the plans for the
first Death Star, the one Luke destroyed during the trench run battle in A New
Hope.
Lucasfilm President
Kathleen Kennedy, and Lucasfilm's Story Group Kiri Hart were also at the panel,
and revealed that the spinoff films will be going under the Anthology banner as
a away to differentiate from the Episodes.
As for Jedi and Sith
in Rogue One, Edwards says that the film "comes
down to a group of individuals who don’t have magical powers that have to
somehow bring hope to the galaxy."
Though Rogue One is still in preproduction, Edwards did managed to with ILM put together a
brief teaser featuring a: "TIE fighter soars over a forest/jungle planet. An
ominous space station-like image is seen in the clouds…"
Some concept art of actress
Felicity Jones was put up on screen, and it reveals that she will play Rebel
soldier.
Edwards says that in
addition to filming at Pinewood, they will also be shooting all over the world.
The filmmaker also
revealed that he's aiming for realism, and that Rogue One will very much be a
war picture. "It's the reality of war. Good
guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It's complicated, layered; a very rich
scenario in which to set a movie."
Rogue
One starts filming this Summer, and will be released on December of 2016.
