Sony Pictures is expanding their
Ghostbusters franchise beyond director Paul Feig's upcoming female led film,
which will star Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate
McKinnon.
According to Deadline, Sony is
putting together a new production company titled Ghostcorps, which will have Ivan
Reitman and Dan Aykroyd coming up with possible branding ideas based on the
classic 1984 film. One of such ideas is to have Captain America: The Winter
Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo direct and produce a new male-driven
Ghostbuster film with Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible 5 scribe Drew Pearce
penning it. As for Channing Tatum it seems that he and his partners Reid
Carolin, and Peter Kiernan are also attached to produce the new film with the
hope that Tatum will also star in it.
"We want to expand the
Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows,
merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment," Reitman told Deadline. "This
is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy.
Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come
out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there
will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that
builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the
Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the
following hear. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of
wonderful movies."
The Russo brothers, who are
currently amidst pre-production on Captain America: Civil War were rumored to
be replacing Joss Whedon at the helm of The Avengers franchise starting with Infinity
Wars parts 1 and 2, but these news might put that on the backburner depending
on how long it will take to get things ready.
