Jared Leto Gaining Weight To Play Joker In Suicide Squad

On August 5, 2016 we will see if Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto was able to get out of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger shadow, when he steps into the big screen as Joker in writer/director David Ayer's Suicide Squad. At this time it's unclear how his performance as the Clown Prince of Crime will be different from the previous ones, but one thing seems to be clear, he will be heavier.

"Do you mind if I eat a little?" Jared Leto asked Billboard during a recent interview. "I'm trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours -- and I'm terrible at eating a lot." It's worth pointing out that the actor was eating vegetarian tacos, which I'm guessing is not the best way for one to gain weight.

This isn't the first time Leto had to change is weight to match the character we is playing. For his role as Mark Chapman, the lunatic who assassinated John Lennon in the 2007 Chapter 27 film, Leto gained 67lbs or 30kg, and for his Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, where he played a transsexual battling with AIDS called Rayon, the actor lost 40lbs or 18Kg. For the Joker I'm not sure how much weight he is putting in but I'm guessing it won't be a lot, since the Joker is slim built.

Leto also spoke about what attracted him to the role, and how he sees the iconic character he is about to play.

"The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character -- that's what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?" Leto says. "[He's] this beautiful disaster of a character -- what a big challenge."

Opening on August 5, 2016, the Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (Joker), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).
