Having written Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World,
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel's Agent Carter, and the upcoming
Captain America: Civil War, screenwriters Stephen McFeely, and Christopher
Markus have a unique perspective on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how it all
works and it all intertwines.
Speaking to Collider the duo was asked if we will see Peggy build a
family, or if that is something for a different season should the series get
picked-up.
"We like
to raise the question…", said McFeely. "Well, I find it funny – this is a bit of a tangent - because
I read a bunch of reviews over the first two weeks but it was all, “What a
great, empowering show.” And the whole feminist conversation, I
really like that. And then the next week was, “Who is she going to
marry?” And I was like, “Is that the same
publication?” We always knew that if people really caught it
in The Winter Soldier, and weintroduce enough candidates in Agent
Carter it would come up. I’m perfectly happy for it to come up
now. But if you told me we had three more seasons, we’d probably get
closer."
In Captain America: The Winter
Soldier we find out that S.H.I.E.L.D. had become increasingly rotten since the
end of Captain America: The First Avenger, and the safe haven it provided to
Hydra scientists. Will we see that play out in the show?
"Hydra is a blessing and a
curse, because as soon as we say, “There they are,” and we show them to the
audience, we either have to have Peggy deal with it and then get knocked on the
head - because clearly she didn’t know about it - or we have to
hide it from Peggy. It’s a storytelling question that we are playing
with and considering", said McFeely.
Wrapping up the talk about Agent
Carter the duo was also asked if there would be any superpowered characters making
things difficult for Peggy.
"I guess the question’s open," teased McFeely. "We
live in the Marvel universe. We’re also on television, so what can we do
well? Is the Whizzer stopping by any time? I’m not
positive. For now, what you’re seeing in the show is certainly the
flavor of the show for this season, but who knows."
Moving on to the big screen, and that
little taste we got of Civil War during Marvel's Phase 3 presentation, where
Tony and Steve don't really see eye to eye, and some tension builds up. The duo
was asked if they had anything to do with adding that scene in there.
"No," McFeely stated. "Obviously
I’m glad they put that in there, but I don’t even know the relationship between
when we decided to Civil War and when that scene was put in,
so it could just be good tension, a good scene, but it’s a clean set up.
It’s a good intro."
The Civil War storyline was one that
fans had speculated for quite awhile before it was officially announced by
Marvel. The main brake on the theory was that the studio didn't had the rights
to a big chunk of the characters, so it was impossible. So when was is it
decided that that was the way to go?
"It’s
been on and off the table for a while, let’s put it that way, and it’s a
challenge to do it and make sure that all the characters that we’ve
established, and everyone’s established in the MCU are serviced and sound
correct, right? Because there’s a difference between the characters in Civil War, which
was written in 2006, 2007," said McFeely. "The MCU didn’t exist.
There isn’t a Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans who has helped create the
character, so we need to make sure that that template gets adjusted and what
have you in order to make sure it services these characters and not just sort
of rip off their parts and make them look like them."
What do you think?
