The last update we had from the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's popular manga Ghost in
the Shell, Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie was in talks to star. Well apparently
the negotiations broke (probably because of Warner Bros. upcoming Suicide Squad),
and DreamWorks decided to offered the lead role (Major
Kusanagi) to
Scarlett Johansson, who according to Deadline already signed on.
Ghost
in the Shell follows Section 9 a team from the Japanese National Public Safety
Commission, which specializes in fighting technology-related crimes, and cyber
criminals. The team led by Chief Daisuke Aramaki, and Major Kusanagi is tasked
to investigate a series of crimes perpetrated by a Puppeteer, who hacks humans
with cyberbrains and makes them do his bidding. The rest of the teams
operatives are Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito, Paz, Borma, and Azuma.
Snow
White and The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders is on board to direct the Bill
Wheeler script. Avi Arad and Steven Paul will produce with Dreamworks and
Steven Spielberg overseeing the adaptation.
