Peter Jackson On The Possibility Of More Tolkien Films

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be the last time audiences will visit Middle-Earth on the big screen, however Lord of the Rings, and Hobbit star, actor Ian McKellen recently stated that he believed that director Peter Jackson would eventually return to that universe, and that he wasn't done playing Gandalf.

Well, in a recent interview Jackson confirms that this will in fact be the last film based on Tolkien property, for now at least.

“The Tolkien estate owns the writings of Professor Tolkien – The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were sold by Professor Tolkien in the late Sixties, the film rights,” Jackson said at a press conference yesterday. “But they are the only two works of his that have been sold. So without the cooperation of the Tolkien estate, there can’t be more films.”

I say for now because the director didn't said: "we won't be making any more movies based on Tolkien books", what the director is actually saying is that for now…no more since they don't own the rights. Do you believe that Warner Bros. will simply let this cash making property go? No, I'm betting that there have already been talks with the Tolkien estate about the rights for future movies.

Both The Hobbit (so far), and The Lord of the Rings trilogy have made loads and loads of money. In theaters alone it made almost $5 billion, but then you add video games, toys, DVD, Blu-rays, collectibles, and all other sorts of merchandising so I'm almost betting that you can expect to hear in the near future WB announcing that they have acquired the rights to The Silmarillion.

As for the hastag #OneLastTime, do you want a better marketing hook than that?
