We recently read
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn offer his opinion on forced
franchises, and here is a good example of such a case.
Speaking to
ComingSoon, Wanted (2008) producer Marc Platt revealed that the script for the
sequel is getting there.
“We have a script that’s getting pretty good,” Platt said. “To do a sequel when it wasn’t really set up
for a sequel–one of our main characters dies in it. You don’t want to just
retread a similar story, but when we get the script to a certain bar, there
will be a sequel. It’s taken a while because it’s challenging, as I said,
because we lost a main, main character, so where that James McAvoy character
goes now… we have good ideas though. It’s coming along.”
Platt also confirmed that the creator of
the graphic novel in which the film was based on, Marc Millar ("Kick-Ass") would be involved with
the sequel but not with the script.
“He’s always going to be involved but he’s not
going to write the screenplay which is far along, as I said, but he’s always
going to be involved because the tone he puts forth is so much his tone and I
think the film captured that dark humor of his really well.”
Wanted managed to gross $341 million and change on
a $75 million budget, and despite some fans outcry about the film shifting too
far away from the source material it was considered fresh on Rotten Tomatoes
both critically (71%) and with audience members(69%). However, and like Platt
said the film wasn't set up for a sequel, so one would imagine why the sudden
interest in making one, six years after the first one came out. $
