Deadline is reporting
that 20th Century Fox has finally greenlit Roland Emmerich's sequel to the 1996
summer blockbuster, Independence Day, with production set to begin in May of
2015, for a June 24, 2016 release, which "coincidentally" will be the
first movie 20th year anniversary.
The news outlet goes
on to say that a source has told them that the studio only greenlit one film,
as oppose to Emmerich's earlier statements about a trilogy and shooting two of
them back-to-back.
Last year the
director revealed that the film would be set 20 years (give or take) after the
first film.
