Marvel and Jack
Kirby's heirs have reached an agreement over Kirby's rights to the characters
he created and co-created for the publisher. The statement comes just days
before the Supreme Court was set to take the matter into conference. Here's
their joint statement:
“Marvel and the
family of Jack Kirby have amicably resolved their legal disputes, and are
looking forward to advancing their shared goal of honoring Mr. Kirby’s
significant role in Marvel’s history.”
The issue of rights
over comic book characters is unfortunately nothing new, and will continue to exist
until the publishers or the main companies (in this case Disney) understand
that those old contracts (if there were
any) were exploitive and that reparations towards the creators must be made.
