This
weekend, Marvel Studios gave a private screening of Guardians of the
Galaxy to Bill Mantlo, the co-creator of Rocket Raccoon, who in 1992
was involved in a hit-and-run that left the scribe with traumatic
brain injury.
BleedingCool broke the news, when Bill's brother, Michael Mantlo informed the
site that Marvel had provided a special screening of Guardians of the
Galaxy.
*****WHAT
AN INCREDIBLE DAY FOR BILL MANTLO*****
Marvel
hooked Bill up with a PRIVATE VIEWING of “Guardians Of The Galaxy”,
and my wife Liz and my beloved cousin Jean assisted Bill throughout,
enabling him to sit back, relax and relish in the AWESOMENESS of what
is going to be, in my humble opinion, Marvel’s GREATEST AND MOST
SUCCESSFUL FILM EVER! Bill thoroughly enjoyed it, giving it his
HIGHEST COMPLIMENT (the BIG “THUMB’S UP!”), and when the
credits rolled, his face was locked into the HUGEST SMILE I HAVE EVER
SEEN HIM WEAR (along with one or two tears of joy)! This was the
GREATEST DAY OF THE LAST 22 YEARS for me, our family, and most
importantly, BILL MANTLO!
The gentlemen that made it possible for Bill to see his creation, ROCKET RACCOON, come alive in “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, Marvel Attorney David Althoff (far left) and Marvel VP David Bogart (center). Giving Bill this opportunity was a daunting challenge (with all the legal & security protocols that needed to be breached), but these two FINE MEN made it happen, and Bill had the HAPPIEST DAY OF HIS LIFE! I will NEVER be able to thank them enough for all that they have done for Bill!

In
addition, Michael says that "Marvel
has made incredibly generous gestures apart from this particular
contract to assist in Bill’s ongoing care & rehabilitation."
This
Next Part Contains Spoilers! You Have Been Warned
Despite
the earlier statements given by the director, where he said that
Guardians of the Galaxy was going to be in a way “detached” from
the current MCU, Gunn's space adventure not only give us a better and
full picture of the Mad Titan Thanos, but also give us and regular
movie audiences a better explanation about the Infinity Gems.
When
our team of misfits go see the Collector at his easter egg filled
museum, they find out just how powerful the orb they possess is, and
that it is but one of six infinity stones.
Speaking
with Hitfix, Gunn says while the Tesseract (Captain America: The
First Avenger, The Avengers), and the Aether (Thor: The Dark World)
have been showed, none of Earth's Mightiest Heroes are aware that a)
someone is after them, and b) that if he manages to get them all and
form the infinity gauntlet EVERYONE will be in peril.
"These
are people that see a little bit more of the big picture because
that's where they are, I guess," said Gunn. "On Earth,
these other guys, The Avengers, they're not quite tuned in to the
bigger picture. They only see a little tiny piece of it. They're
holding the ear of the elephant in the dark room. The Collector is…
he's got all the lights on."
Speaking
to The Playlist, Gunn talked about what he wanted for Guardians
versus the studio's vision, and creating the Infinity Gems.
"We
talked early on about having Thanos in the movie, which, believe me I
was excited to have Thanos in the movie because a) I love Thanos and
b) I want people who have seen The
Avengers to
go see this because we're connected to it," he said. "There
was no fight from me having Thanos in the movie. But for me, I wrote
a group of characters with the plot points I wanted to write and the
stuff that's connected to the rest of the Marvel universe was very
exciting for me to be a part of. To just sit down and create what the
Infinity Gems are, I got to sit down and add to the overall Marvel
universe and build up the Marvel universe, because I got to create
that. And that was very exciting to me."
In
regards to which of the Infinity Gems is featured in Guardians, Gunn
confirmed that it is the Power Stone, which leaves the Mind, Time,
and Soul, because the Tesseract is Space, and the Aether is Reality.
Backtracking
for a bit to Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector. Speaking to
Speakeasy, Gunn revealed that he had a blast filming The Collector's
museum, which among other things like a Chitauri, and a Dark Elf,
held Cosmo the Soviet telepathic space dog, and of course Howard the
Duck, which appear in the after-credit scene of the film.
"I
was a big Howard the Duck fan when I was a kid; the comics, not the
movie."
Gunn
gave some more hints regarding The Collector's museum, when he was
asked by Slash Film, if all the things the Collector collects are
teases for the future.
"Yeah,
I mean, there’s a lot of stuff in the Collector’s Museum. And for
me, it was mostly just really fun. As a Marvel fan, giving the actual
fans something that they can freeze frame on their Blu-Ray at home
and just kind of pick out everything that’s in there. So there are,
I mean, seriously all those boxes have something interesting in them,
so it’s pretty fun."
In
addition, Kevin Feige revealed that there is a nod to Gunn's Slither
movie in the museum.
