David Yates Returns To The Harry Potter Universe With Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them

After directing four of the eight Harry Potter movies, director David Yates returns to the franchise to helm its spin-off, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them.

According to Variety the director, who hasn't signed yet, will pick up the project once he finishes with Tarzan (currently shooting). The film is set 70 years before Harry was born, and will follow Newt Scamander, the author of the Hogwarts text book. Unlike the previous films, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them won't be filmed in the U.K., but in New York.

"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world."

Awhile back J.K. Rowling revealed that the plan is for a new trilogy. The Scamander role hasn't been cast yet, but it's said that they are looking for someone in their early 20's.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will be an original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series. Set in the wizarding world, the story will feature magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans. “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”
