After
helping J.J. Abrams, Marc Webb, and Michael Bay with their respective
tentpole franchises, screenwriter Alex Kurtzman is now ready to make
one of his own. According to THR, Kurtzman has been tapped to helm the
first movie in Universal's classic monster shared cinematic universe,
which he is weaving together with Chris Morgan.
Kurtzman
will direct The Mummy reboot, and despite having a release date of
May 22, 2016, not much is known about the project, with the exception
that it's “set
in the present and is not a horror play but raher an action adventure
tentpole with horror elements,”
and will “feature
new characters and not rehash previous incarnations.”
“Over
the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such
clarity and passion about this character and mythology,”
said Universal's Co-President of Production, Jeff Kirschenbaum. “He
knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring
that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious
that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative
engineers of this new vision but its director as well.”
The
Mummy reboot has a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor
Strange).
