The UK Won't Have Snowpiercer’s Director’s Cut And How About The US?

Back in August the Weinstein Company announced that they would have director’s Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated Snowpiercer get cut in 20 minutes for the English spoken market because they were concerned that the film was too slow and complicated, and that “their aim is to make sure the film ‘will be understood by audiences in Iowa … and Oklahoma.”

Well this didn’t go down as well as they were hoping, because the media grabbed the story and boy did it fly. Regardless of any possible outrage of fans, English spoken individuals and possibly, people from Iowa and Oklahoma, the director didn’t seemed all that shaken up about it he even said in an interview to Xin Msn that:
“I’ve never produced a new version for overseas premieres, and this is the first time I’m making a new version. Weinstein is actually being pretty soft toward editing, probably because it’s noticed how critics have praised the film and know how angry movie fans get over new edits. They even asked me which parts I want to include in the film.”

Now it seems that all is not that well in the kingdom of the Weinstein’s, because according to some sources near the director, he is “privately furious.” Well no wonder, the so far the movie not only got praise reviews but was also a box-office hit in South Korea, hitting $61.5 million so far.

Unfortunately the director private anger isn’t enough to stop this big oiled machine, so he announces that the version that the Weinstein’s will be releasing in English spoken countries won’t be his film, but a chopped up version of it.

Last month actress Tilda Swinton spoke about the subject, saying that:
“There’s no question that all English-speaking audiences deserve to see director Bong’s cut, and we hope very much that we will all see it. Maybe an effect of the film, it just occurred to me, is that when one has spent two hours in the claustrophobia of this train we can leave the cinema and feel the relief that we can make life wider, so maybe it’s a sort of aversion therapy to sit in the train for two hours… That’s two hours, not one hour and forty minutes.”

Snowpiercer stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Song Kang-ho, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ed Harris and Alison Pill.

So far only non-English spoken have released dates, with South Korea and France being so far the only countries where the movie has been released.
