Last year’s Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games was very successful not only at the box-office but also in reviews, which prompted Lionsgate to adapt Suzanne Collins other two books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay.
Because
of the success in the first installment Lionsgate wanted move has fast as
possible with the second and third books adaptation, but director Gary Ross wanted
time to work on the script before jumping behind the camera, so Ross left the
project, being replaced by director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend and Water for
Elephants) who started prepping the Catching Fire right away.
In
an interview to the New York Magazine, Lawrence talked a little bit about his
take on the material and visual style:
“No!
[Laughs.] No shaky cam. I think a lot of people will be happy to hear that.”
Lawrence
then added he decided to focus more on the love story between Jennifer Lawrence’,
Josh Hutcherson’s and Liam Hemsworth’s characters:
“I
felt the love story in general was, um, a bit buried in the first one. I wanted
to bring the love story to the surface. And when I say love story, I mean the
triangle.”
I
thought the “shaky cam” made the social commentary on the film look more real
and believable, and changing that to a more established and detached type of
visual style may work against the film.
