Disney’s Maleficent is the first stepping stone for other live actions feature film adaptations, like Cinderella and Cruella. Maleficent tells the classic Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of Maleficent, the evil witch, played by Angelina Jolie.
Robert
Stromberg, who won two Oscars as a production designer for Alice in Wonderland
and Avatar makes his directorial debut with Maleficent, and as one could have
expected making such a big film with zero experience behind the camera could
lead to some issues.
Disney
have announced that they are going to do some reshoots in order to improve the
film’s opening scenes, and although Stromberg is still directing them, they
brought in director John Lee Hancock (The Alamo and The Blind Side) to give a
helping hand.
Per
HV, Hancock was brought in to write some new opening scenes and will be present
to oversee their shoot. Producer Joe Roth explained Hancock’s involvement as:
“We
asked him to be on set. He’s not
directing. He wrote pages and I hired a
first-time director and it’s good to have him on set.”
Maleficent
is a $200 million film, and as such Disney is keen on not repeating the same
mistakes it made in the past.
