According to SI, the Tony award winner and Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman confirmed during the Zurich Film Festival that he will be joining Neil Blomkamp’s next sci-fi project Chappie, which “tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.”
“…I
am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in
Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”
Jackman
will join Blomkamp’s longtime collaborator, actor Sharlto Copley, who will
voice Chappie, and the two members of the South African rapper group Die
Antwoord, Ninja and Yolandi whom will be the two gangsters.
At
some point there was some talk about Dev Patel joining in on the project, but in
the last press release there was no mention of him, but Blomkamp did say he was
trying the get a new actor in. it remains to be seen if he was mentioning Patel
or the already casted Jackman.
Chappie
is set to begin shooting this Fall.
