After
the disappointing sequel that was Cars 2 many claimed that Pixar had lost its edge
on the animation market, but with last year’s Brave and the just released
Monsters University, Pixar is slowly getting back on the saddle.
One
of the main claims, regarding Pixar’s lost edge on the market and quality is
that they are starting to get too focused on making sequels, instead of doing
what they do best, which is high quality original feature films. But after so
many complaints and a slight drop at the box-office, Pixar Studios Predisent,
Ed Catmull now says that they are planning to cut back on the sequels, and are
aiming to do one original film every year and sequels every other year.
In
an interview to Buzzfeed, Catmull said that “For artistic reasons … it’s really
important that we do an original film a year,” says Catmull, who also serves as
president of Walt Disney Animation. “Every once in a while, we get a film where
we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the
rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were
successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing
original films.”
Apparently
they are keeping up with their promises, because they are currently working on
two original films, The Good Dinosaur, which comes May 30, 2014 and Inside Out
which comes out June 19, 2015.
But
regarding their best intentions, Pixar is planning on a spin-off of Finding Nemo called
Finding Dory which is coming out November 25 of 2015 and is having some trouble
with the title for the film about Dia de los Muertos, which they wanted to
patented but got side barred because of the Mexican holyday of the same name.
