Academy Award winning screenwriter Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump") is
set to adapt Frank Herbert's Dune for Denis Villeneuve to direct.
"Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man
known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble
family, and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable
dream."
In addition to winning the statuette with Gump, the writer was also nominated
three additional times, them being The Insider (2000), Munich (2006), and The Curious
Case of Benjamin Button (2009), all films based on material previously produced
or published.
Legendary picked up the film and television rights to Herbert's 1965 novel in
late 2016.
Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter will produce the film with Thomas
Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert acting as executive
producers.
Sci-fi writer Kevin J. Anderson, who is responsible for the Star Wars and
X-Files spinoff novels, will be serving as a creative consultant.
In 1984 David Lynch's Dune opened in theaters to poor
reviews, but the film ultimately found a cult following.
