Bill Condon is set to
direct the remake of Bride of Frankenstein for Universal as part of their classic
monsters universe.
In past interviews,
Condon has said that the original 1935 film, which starred Elsa Lanchester (the
bride) and Boris Karloff (Frankenstein's monster), is one of his favorite
classic monster movies of all time.
In 1999, Condon won
the Oscar for best-adapted screenplay for his film Gods and Monsters, a drama
he directed about the latter days of James Whale the director of many classic monster
films including Bride of Frankenstein. Ian McKellen played Whale and received an
Oscar nomination for best actor in a leading role.
More recently, Condon
directed Disney's live-action take on Beauty and the Beast, which has so far
has grossed past the $1 B mark.
Produced by Alex
Kurtzman and Chris Morgan from a screenplay by David Koepp ("Jurassic Park"),
the new Bride of Frankenstein is said to have a feminist bent to it.
Universal has been
trying to mine their library of movie monsters for awhile now, but the first
test comes June 9 when Kurtzman's The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise hits
theaters.
