After
some back and forth, Warner Bros. is now officially announcing that Matt Reeves
will be directing the upcoming Batman standalone film starring Ben Affleck…maybe?
First
things first, the filmmaker was the top choice for Warner after Affleck's
decision to step away from directing the movie a few weeks ago, but
negotiations reportedly broke down, and though there was a change they could
still resume, the future of the project was up in the air in terms of who would
direct it. Still, the studio had backups in their minds, including Ridley Scott
and Fede Alvarez.
In
the official press release (underneath) Warner Bros.' President and CCO Toby Emmerich announced the hiring of Reeves, who also
had a few words to say.
"(February 23, 2017 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros.
Pictures announced today that Matt Reeves ("Dawn of the Planet of the
Apes," "Cloverfield") has been set to direct “The Batman.”
Reeves will also serve as a producer on the new standalone action adventure centering
on one of DC’s most enduringly popular Super Heroes. The announcement was made
by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures
Group.
Emmerich stated, "We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm
of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films
and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the
perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey."
Matt Reeves noted, "I have loved the Batman story since I was a child.
He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me
deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to
bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen."
Batman was created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.
"The Batman" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.
Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company."
Now…regarding the Ben Affleck maybe?
While it is true that Affleck, who played the character in the critically
panned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is reprising his role in Zack
Snyder's upcoming Justice League, it is also true that Warner neglected to
include the actor's name in the press release above, at all.
Does this mean anything? Probably (hopefully) not, but if it does, then it
would mean that they are planning to pull a Joel Schumacher and recast the
role, which would be odd considering this is the first movie solely dedicated
to Batman in Warner's first ever superhero universe.
But what do you think? Is Warner (whom aren't exactly famous for their
press releases) just keeping the focus on Reeves, or is Affleck (who is
probably under contract for x amount of films) keeping his distance until the
new script comes?
