Oscar-winning actress
Jennifer Connelly is joining the ambitious big screen adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's well-liked Japanese manga series Alita: Battle Angel.
The film is currently
in production in Texas with Robert Rodriguez behind the camera and James
Cameron producing.
Set in the 26th century, the film sees the people and cyborgs of the Scrapyard
living beneath the floating and ruling city of Tiphares, whose trash pours down
below. One day Doctor Dyson Ido, a former Tipharean citizen and doctor
specializing in cyborg repairs, finds the intact head of young cyborg-girl in a
huge pile of scrap. He takes her in, fixes her, and gives her a name, Alita.
Still amnesiac, but with knowledge of long forgotten fighting techniques, Alita
decides to become a bounty collector.
Character details are
being kept under wraps, but according to THR, Connelly is set to play one of
the movie's villains opposite The Maze Runner's Rosa Salazar in the lead
titular role.
Set to land in
theaters in 2018, Alita: Battle Angel also stars Mahershala
Ali, Jackie Earle Haley, Christoph
Waltz, Keen Johnson, and Ed Skrein.
