Hollywood icon Jack
Nicholson is coming of retirement to star in the English-language remake of the
Oscar nominated German comedy Toni Erdmann.
Nicholson, who hasn't
been seen since starring in James L. Brooks' critically panned 2010 comedy How
Do You Know opposite Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, and Kathryn
Hahn, is set to play the titular character.
Adam McKay, who last
year got himself an Oscar for his co-writing achievements on The Big Short,
will produce the film for Paramount along with Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbuam.
Maren
Ade, the writer and director of the original film will executive produce the US
remake along with producers Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski.
According
to Variety, Nicholson, who turns 80 this year, was a fan of the German film and
approached Paramount's chief Brad Grey with the remake idea, and Grey immediately
secured the rights.
The original
film told the story of a practical joking father whom in order to get closer to his
estranged daughter creates the smooth-talking and
flashy alter ego Toni Erdmann.
Paramount is now
looking for someone to play Nicholson's daughter in the film as well as a
writer and a director.
