Sicario 2 Writer Teases Plot

Serious dramas are not usually prone to suffer from sequelitis, so it was quite the surprise when just a few days after opening in theaters Lionsgate decided to announce Soldado, the unexpected sequel to Denis Villeneuve's Sicario.

From a script by Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan ("Hell or High Water"), the thrilling comment on America's war on drugs and foreign policy was set in a lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, and followed Kate (Emily Blunt), an idealistic FBI agent, who is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Speaking to Collider, Taylor, who is returning to pen the screenplay, explained how the project even came about since story-wise Sicario wrapped things up in a very satisfying way.

"One of the producers called me and said, ‘If you were to do a sequel, how would you do it?’ and when he first brought it up I thought,’ Well of course you’re asking me.’ And then I had an idea, and I said, ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out? You’ve seen Sicario, good isn’t going to factor into it too much."

When asked if like Sicario, Soldado would be seen from the point of view of a law enforcement agent, Sheridan offered a rather terrifying answer.

"I would say if Sicario is a film about the militarization of police and that blending over, this is removing the policing aspect from it."

To be directed by Stefano Sollima ("Gomorra"), Soldado will follow Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro's unsavory characters.
