Mr. Robot creator Sam
Esmail has set his sights on his next project, an adaptation of Fritz Lang's revered
1927 sci-fi film Metropolis. The miniseries is being developed at Universal
Cable Productions, where the writer and director has an overall deal. However,
sources claim that Esmail's role on the miniseries is still being negotiated,
and that the studio isn't aiming to launch the series for another two to three
years.
According to THR, the
miniseries will not deviate from the film. "The small-screen adaptation
will take place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast
city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of
underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that
provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star crossed lovers from
opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system."
Esmail will executive
produce Metropolis with Anonymous Content's Chad Hamilton, who is also an EP on
Mr. Robot.
THR adds that the
writer's room for Metropolis will be less traditional than regular writers
rooms with only two or three writers working on it. The plan it seems is to
focus more on how to turn the 1927 film into an episodic series and less about writing
the scripts.
Furthermore, Universal
Cable Productions is rumored to be ready to spend a mammoth $10 million per
episode, and that no order has been given to place the miniseries on one of
their many networks such as Syfy or Mr. Robot's USA Network. The latter is said
to be the likeliest home for the miniseries, however UCP will probably try to
sell the show to other cable and streaming outlets as well.
At the time of its
release in 1927, the German film was one of the most expensive movies ever
made, and was considering groundbreaking for its use of special effects.
