Danish filmmaker
Susanne Bier has reportedly joined the shortlist of directors being considered
for the next James Bond film now that Sam Mendes has stepped down from the
position after having directed Skyfall in 2012, and Spectre in 2015.
According to the
Radio Times, Bier is one of many names James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is
considering to replace Mendes who announced this past weekend his decision not
to return to the franchise.
Bier recently directed
all six episodes of the acclaimed BBC/AMC adaptation of John le Carré 1993
novel The Night Manager, starring Tom Hiddleston as a concierge-turned-spy.
It's unknown who else
is on the list, but should the Oscar-winning filmmaker be chosen to helm the next
Bond film, she would become the first woman to do so in decades of male behinds
sitting on the director's chair.
Getting Bier to direct the 25th Bond film could also mean
that her The Night Manager leading man and Bond hopeful Tom Hiddleston suddenly becomes a very
strong contender to replace Daniel Craig as the next 007. The filmmaker recently
praised the actor for having "a certain enigmatic quality to his eyes",
adding that we "aren't sure you can trust him, but you are sure there is a
pain there that he doesn’t show. He's so immaculate and fun and elegant and
charming, and there is somewhere inside of him a painfulness, which I think for
most women, is irresistible."
Bier won her Best Foreign Language Film Oscar with Hævnen, i.e. In A
Better World.
