Captain
America filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo are getting into the booming Chinese
market with a superhero franchise nicknamed Captain China.
Back
in March, the directing duo set up the boutique studio Anthem & Song in the
country and joined forces with the Chinese film company Beijing FangJin Visual
Media Culture Communication Company to develop and co-produce 英雄觉醒 or A
Hero's Awakening in English.
"It is fair to say that the Russos are regarded
as heroes in the global film business," FangJin CEO Li Xing told THR from
Beijing. "In the future, everyone will be focused on the China market. By
working with the Russos, we want to use the best visual storytelling to make
localized films that fit the Chinese market."
Game of Thrones, Kong: Skull Island, and Disney's The
Jungle Book concept artist Anthony Leonardi III will serve as artistic director
for A Hero's Awakening, and will be working side-by-side with the Chinese
director.
The
Russo brothers are actively involved in the casting process, which according to
Li will exclusively be Chinese.
Insider
speculation says the Chinese film market will become the largest one in the
world next year and with good reason. Last year the market grew 48% grossing
$6.8 billion with Hollywood and local productions splitting the revenues roughly
50-50. However, the first quarter of 2016 saw the demand for Chinese films rise
and taking about 75% market share.
Other
studios such as Warner Bros. and DreamWorks Animation are also getting into the
rapidly expanding market with Chinese-language project of their own.
