The Walt Disney
Studios has officially announced that Mary Poppins will return to the big
screen more than five decades after the first film with Emily Blunt taking over
the magical nanny duties from Julie Andrews, and Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel
Miranda ("Hamilton") playing Jack.
Oscar nominated
director Rob Marshall ("Chicago") is directing the new original
musical based on P.L. Travers' iconic series of Mary Poppins books published
between 1935 and 1988.
"I am truly
humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further
adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me
personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can
bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even
the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation," Marshall said
in a statement.
Titled Batman
Mary Poppins Returns, the film is said to center on the now grown-up Jane and
Michael Banks, who reunite with the magical nanny after suffering a personal
loss. Poppins then teams with her lamplighter friend Jack (Miranda) to help the
family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
Miranda has a history
with the studio. The award-winning artist composed a couple of themes for Star
Wars: The Force Awakens, and is working on the upcoming animated film Moana starring Dwayne Johnson.
Mary Poppins Returns
opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
