The Vampire Diaries
alum Nina Dobrev has entered negotiations to star in Sony Pictures reboot of
the sci-fi horror movie Flatliners, where she would star opposite Diego Luna
and Ellen Page.
In the film, Dobrev
will play Marlo, an overachiever who is at the top of her medical class. Swedish
filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev ("Girl With The Dragon Tattoo") is set to
direct the project from a script by Ben Ripley ("Source Code").
Laurence Mark and Michael Douglas are producing.
In the '90s movie, Kiefer
Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt, play
a group of med-school buddies who in an attempt
to discover what awaits us after death concoct a plan to temporarily
"flatline" themselves one at a time, stopping all brain activity, to
briefly experience death before being resuscitated. A number of them are
"killed" and brought back with vivid memories of their past, and the
experiment is deemed a success. However, it seems as though they may have
gotten more than they bargained for when their past literally comes back to
haunt them.
Directed
by Joel Schumacher, the original movie received two Saturn Award nominations,
one for Best Sci-Fi Film and another for Best Supporting Actress for Roberts,
as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Effects.
