Ana de Armas ("Knock Knock") has signed on
to star in director Denis Villeneuve's ("Sicario") upcoming Blade
Runner sequel, where she joins Harrison Ford, who reprises his role as Rick Deckard,
and franchise newcomers Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright and Dave Bautista in
undisclosed roles.
As you might have guessed given the secrecy behind the
project, de Armas role is being kept a secret for now, but the press release
does confirm that she signed on for a "leading role" in the movie.
"We
think Ana is one of the most exciting, up-and-coming international actors in
the world today," said Alcon Entertainment's co-founders and co-CEO's
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. "We are thrilled she will be playing
such an important part in this sequel."
The Cuban born actress began her career starring in
Spanish language film and television in Cuba, then later Spain. She will be
seen in two major motion pictures this coming August, including The Weinstein
Company's boxing biopic Hands of Stone, in
which she appears alongside Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez, and Warner Bros.'
comedic drama War Dogs starring
Jonah Hill and Miles Teller.
Written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, based on
a story by Fancher and Ridley Scott, Blade Runner 2 is set several decades
after the 1982 original film, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and
David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Blade Runner 2 reunites Villeneuve with his multi-Oscar
nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins ("Sicario",
"Prisoners").
Blade Runner 2 opens in theaters on October 7, 2017.
